A 6-year-old boy was attacked by a mountain lion while walking near the lodge at Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park with his family Sunday night.

The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries — scrapes and puncture wounds to his face, according to park officials.

His father was able to fight off the cat by stabbing it with a pocket knife.

He said: “It had a hold of his face…the cat was clamped on his face. I reached down and got my knife out and stabbed the cat in the chest and it let go at that point.”

The boy was transferred to a hospital in Alpine and later released.

A West Texas television station reported the victim was Rivers Hobbs. The family is from Leander, near Austin, according to the park service.

By 8 a.m. Monday, several trails were closed and dog teams were brought in to search for the cat but couldn’t pick up the scent.

“From the description, it’s small and haggard-looking,” park spokesman David Elkowitz said. “It would appear to be a young lion.”

The attack on a sidewalk between the lodge and a restaurant is believed to be the second reported sighting of the lion that night.

Shortly before the attack, a cat with a similar description approached a family in a campground and was chased off with a backpack that the cat then took into the brush. The pack has been recovered.

Rangers are patrolling the basin area, including the Window Trail. Nearby backcountry campsites remain closed.

The park advised visitors that children should not hike in the Chisos Mountains and that trail closures could change.

The cat would be killed if it is found, and live traps have been set.

The last such attack in Big Bend, by an old female cat with missing teeth, occurred in 2003 and caused non-life-threatening injuries.

FYI: The Worlds Interesting Man is boring compared to Joe Danato.

Joe Danato who lives up in Vegas was at the show with his son. Every time he comes, I love talking to him and listing to the tales he tells. I find out more and more about this very interesting man, such as, as a young man he also rode rodeo. Another passion we share besides the love of knives.

One of the most fascinating jobs Joe did was that as an honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier back in the early 1950s

He is one of those unique individuals I’ve had the honor to have gotten to know through collecting knives
